#TeamYOS Team Member - Jana

Meet Jana K. Hoffman, editor of MISSBISH, who began writing at the tender age of six. Her writing career has blossomed with much experience under her belt, including working for a number of publications. To stay afloat on busy days, Jana turns to a reliable KIND bar and always loves a good salad. Get to know more about Jana, her go-to work out spots as a recent transplant in Los Angeles and her principles on team work.

Where were you born/raised?
I grew up in Allentown, PA (that’s the Philadelphia side for those of you wondering). Then I moved to New York City in 2011 and lived there for five years.

How did you become interested in writing or becoming a journalist?
[Laughs] I wrote my first book when I was in the first grade. It’s called “The Dog That Couldn’t Do Tricks,” and I still have the original manuscript with my very own terrible illustrations. I guess I knew at a very early age that I loved writing and the way I could use it as an outlet to express myself. I wrote a lot of poetry as well, and am getting ready to launch a little side project to get those poems in front of people. It wasn’t until high school when I finally focused on the journalism side of writing. I was an editor on the school newspaper and used super old publishing software to lay out my pages. In college, I studied journalism and had a bi-weekly fashion column in the college newspaper, which was my first foray into fashion writing. I can’t believe this, but my 10-year college anniversary is right around the corner, and my first post-graduation job was the editorial assistant at a regional lifestyle magazine in my hometown. I knew there was more for me so I eventually moved to New York City to grow my career.

What is your current title/role at MissBish?
I’m an editor for MISSBISH and am responsible for pitching and writing featured editorial, interviewing and writing about inspirational women, writing news posts twice a week and attending/covering cool events. The MISSBISH team is global, but we have this amazingly streamlined system for getting stuff done.

On those long days of reporting and interviewing, and after, transcribing, how do you stay energized? What are your go-to healthy treats, snacks or drinks?
Honestly, a good night’s sleep, eating well and staying hydrated. I’m a simple person and don’t necessarily subscribe to “trendy” drinks and snacks, although I’m guilty of doing two juice cleanses once upon a time. I like to start my morning with a probiotic yogurt. Sometimes I’ll add fresh fruit and granola. I love to snack on apples and peanut butter. I’m also a fan of KIND bars, especially when I’m on the go. Salads are my jam, and Sweetgreen makes the best salads. Don’t tell them this, but there’s a grain bowl that I replicate myself, which is much cheaper than having them make it for me. If I’m in Downtown LA, I’ll treat myself to something from Wild Living Foods on East 8th and Main. Their smoothies are so good. And so is their “sushi.”   

I read you're a recent LA transplant...Have you found any places of solace, workout spots or gyms?
Yes! Just hit my 9-month mark in LA. This is going to be a long answer because I’m a pretty active person. My dog and I love to hike, and Griffith Park is super accessible. Walking out my door and up to Griffith is just something I could never do in New York City, so that’s been pretty life-changing. The Angeles Forest also has great hiking. And I recently did a 6-mile hike in Santa Barbara nearby the ocean. It was so peaceful, and the landscapes were so inspiring. It was also an awesome workout!

I love going to the beach and sometimes getting out to surf. I tried climbing for the first time a few months ago, and climbed to the top of the cliff at Point Dume in Malibu. It was a true testament to the incredible possibilities when your mind and body are aligned and working together. That adrenaline high lasted for three days! I’m a longtime snowboarder, but admittedly haven’t been out this season. My boards are sadly collecting dust.

As far as my workouts go, I try to vary it up. Sometimes I take HIIT classes at Sanctuary Fitness in the Arts District. I like to complement that intense workout with yoga to stretch it all out but to also balance my mind, body and spirit. I used to box in New York City but haven’t found a gym out here yet. If anyone has recommendations, let me know! I’ve also done Barry’s Bootcamp and The Class by Taryn Toomey, the latter of which is the hardest but most cathartic workout I’ve ever done. Everyone should try it. 

For you, what does it mean to be a team player?

I think the definition takes on several meanings: Everyone aligning on a vision and working together toward creating a product that you can be proud of in the end. Proactively pitching in even if it’s not asked of you. Motivating others to be or do their best. And being empathetic toward others.
